Stargazer Steam-Goggles by HiddenRelevance Stargazer Steam-Goggles by HiddenRelevance
I have goggles! *bounces around excitedly*

This past weekend, the fabulous ~TouchFeel and I had a steampunk accessory making party! Yes, we know we're geeks, but it was ridiculously fun!

We got part of our ideas from this tutorial [link] by =Fenris-the-Red-Wolf (namely using the bottle lids as a starting point) but from, there we sorta veered off due to money issues. I think the result is a success! (at least as a first attempt!)

Materials:
Bell glass jar lid rings
Plastic make-up bag lenses
Leather-like material from a disected purse
Large brass buckle from old belt
Assorted small gears and filigree stars for decoration

This is great! I just want to ask - what's the diameter of the bottle lids you use for a start? I'd like to make some but I'm not sure how big they should really be...and I'd feel weird (like, even more so than usual) sticking cans to my eye to see how big they are... :XD:

Umm that's a good question - I don't think we measures really. We just went with the normal "jelly jar" size? Mostly we're haphazard and didn't care about sticking cans to our eyes in public lol

Oh cool! Glad it helped then! And yeah, the glass just wasn't something we were going to have time to find and pull off, and even plexiglass can be really hard to cut, so this was our compromise to it!

::gasp!:: Those are awesome and gorgeous and awesome all over again! I like the ways in which you've deviated from the tutorial and made it your own.

Oh thanks so much!!! *blushes*

I had a lot of fun making these.. The tutorial was a great starting point, but some of the stuff (like ordering the plexiglass etc) were rather expensive and hard to do, so me and the friend who had the crafty party just played with a few things until we could make it work!

I'm actually debating on doing commissions.. we'll see how that goes lol..

Ooh... commissions... as in, trade money, goods, or services so that one fine day a pair of shiny awesome steampunk goggles arrives in the mail to make the day shiny and awesome in its likeness? I could get behind that...

Any idea what you'd charge/trade for?

Indeeeeeeed or at least that is the plan lol

Well I'm thinking since I use mostly recycled stuffs for them, I can charge a bit less than most of the ones I've seen. At least at this point, so maybe like $25-30 + shipping.. I think lol

If I were to provide you with enough leather scraps to make a pair for me and have pieces left over for other stuff, would you be willing/able to bring that down to the $20-25 range plus shipping?

Heck, I could probably bring it down to the 15-20 range if you provided the leather.. especially considering I haven't been making these long lol

do you want any kind of theme for the decorations or anything?

I've looked through my bags of leather bits that I got from the Renaissance Faire a couple of years ago, and I put together two pounds of the largest pieces to send to you. They're scraps, so you'll probably still need to do some piecing, but hopefully not too much. They're about 55% black leather, 40% brown, and 5% random colors. Does that sound okay?

I would love, love, love a clockwork kind of theme... gears or something, if you have or can find them. ^_^

Yeah, that would be fantastic actually! And just to make sure we're clear- I don't use an actual lense when I make these.. is that ok?

And ok cool.. I have quite a few gears and things.. I'll see what I can come up with once everything is here.

Sadly no. At this point in my handcrafting, I'm merely a beginner. I hope that eventually I'll be able to produce more functional pieces!
